Scientists in the UK are trying to develop a vaccine against an emerging form of cancer, using the latest in technology.
They are using a DNA molecule called a gene to make it, rather than a virus.
The team at the University of Southampton say they have been able to create a virus that is more stable and less toxic than existing treatments.
The gene they are using, called the BRCA1 receptor, has been known for decades for its role in cancer cells, and could eventually be used to develop an anti-cancer drug.
They say the new virus has the potential to be used as a vaccine for cancer and other serious illnesses.
But they say the results could also help researchers find drugs to treat other conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, and possibly help people living with cancer to live longer.
Professor David Haddock, from Southampton’s School of Biological Sciences, said: “The DNA molecules that are produced by the human body are a lot like a protein in a cell.
We can’t make new drugs using existing technology in the way that we normally do, but we have the opportunity now to try and use the technology to make drugs that we can’t currently produce.””
So it is really interesting to find new ways of making DNA in the lab that are more stable than existing drugs.”

“These are drugs that are actually much more powerful than existing cancer drugs that would only work in the laboratory.”
The problem is that we cannot test the drugs for toxicity, and so we are not really sure what they are doing.
“What we can do is try and look at the effects of the drugs on the body, and see if we can find ways of changing the body to do better.”‘
It’s a fantastic opportunity’ Scientists in Southampton have now developed a gene that can be used for gene therapy, the production of proteins from DNA.
This gene, called BRCAs1R, has a long history of being used in research and has been shown to be a useful model for drug development.
“We’ve shown that we are able to make these genes in the body that have been found to be protective against cancer and potentially other serious diseases,” Professor Haddock said.
“But what we need now is to be able to use them to make a drug that is not only safe for humans, but can be useful for treating other diseases as well.”
